Recreation Site Access Information

KRRC’s recreation sites are currently open according to the schedule and information below. In the event of adverse weather conditions, please continue to check this website for status updates on the recreation sites.

Recreation Access Sites Open

When: August 1, 2025

What: The Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC) is implementing its Recreation Management Plan, which includes the construction or improvement of five day-use recreation river access sites along the restored reach of the Klamath River at the previous J.C. Boyle, Copco, and Iron Gate reservoir areas. Beginning on August 1, 2025, the sites are open to the public. Each site has a river access point, vault toilet, picnic table(s), limited parking, and bike racks. All lands surrounding the recreation sites remain closed. No trespassing outside of the designated recreation site is allowed.

Information about the five recreation sites is available on KRRC’s website: klamathrenewal.org/recreation

Where: Five recreation day-use access sites are open to the public on the restored Klamath River reach between Keno, Oregon and Hornbrook, California:

  • Pioneer Park West (Oregon):
    • Open daily from 7:00am – 7:00pm unless otherwise posted
    • Users should be aware of hazardous waters downriver of the access site.
  • Moonshine Falls (Oregon):
    • Open daily from 7:00am – 7:00pm unless otherwise posted
    • Users should be aware of hazardous waters downriver of the access site.
  • K’utárawáx·u (prounounced ku-ta-ra-wa-hhu), also known as Grizzly Hill (California):
    • Open daily from sunrise to sunset
    • Users should be aware of hazardous waters downriver of the access site.
  • K’účasčas (pronounced ku-chas-chas), also known as Fall Creek (California):
    • Open daily from sunrise to sunset unless otherwise posted
  • Iron Gate (California):
    • Open daily from sunrise to sunset unless otherwise posted

Cautions: The river is undergoing natural changes as it reclaims the river channel. There may be hazards in the channel including but not limited to rapids, rocks, and downed trees. Users should always wear a life jacket when on the river and plan trips based on experience levels.

Specifically, there are Class IV+ rapids, which are characterized by intense, powerful, and turbulent waters, downriver of the Pioneer Park West and Moonshine Falls recreation access sites in Oregon and downriver of the K’utárawáx·u (Grizzly Hill) access site in California.

Questions: The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife manages the recreation access sites in Oregon (Pioneer Park West and Moonshine Falls) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife manages the recreation access sites in California (K’utárawáx·u or Grizzly Hill, K’účasčas or Fall Creek, and Iron Gate). Road Closures

Lakeview Road Closure Extension

When: April 15, 2025 – further notice

What: As authorized by the License Surrender Order issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in November 2022, the Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC) performed necessary construction work related to the drawdown of the J.C. Boyle, Copco, and Iron Gate reservoirs in January 2024 and removal of the four Lower Klamath Project hydroelectric dams later that year. Due to an active construction zone, a 1.1-mile section of Lakeview Road owned by KRRC was temporarily closed for public safety through April 15, 2025. In order to proceed with necessary restoration work, this closure is being extended to ensure public safety as the area remains an active work zone. We will provide further notice when public use is permissible.

Where: Lakeview Road is closed for 1.1 miles uphill from the Iron Gate Fish Hatchery location (just past Lakeview Bridge).

Questions: Please direct all questions, comments, and concerns to the Klamath River Renewal corporation at: info@klamathrenewal.org and/or 510-560-5079.
